Of the seven existing sea turtle species, five nest on the country's beaches. Although they have been protected there under Indonesian law since 1990, poachers continue to collect their eggs at the nesting sites. The acutely endangered animals are also hunted for their meat and carapace.
For this reason, the Turtle Foundation runs a protection project for the leatherback turtles on Sipora off the west coast of Sumatra. A team of six rangers is on duty to protect the nesting females and their eggs from poachers. They also collect data for research purposes and clean the beaches of propelled plastic waste, which is a major obstacle especially for the hatchlings.
Because of its trademark sea turtle, HB has been associated with the Turtle Foundation for many years and regularly supports it with donations. The Turtle Foundation selects and supports projects based on the urgency and intensity of the threat and the chance of success in the foreseeable future. Therefore, it focuses on viable and promising projects.
